SCHOOL RED CROSS YOUTH COUNCIL
THE RED CROSS YOUTH (RCY)
Red Cross Youth is one of the six major services of the Philippine National Red Cross. Its mission is to educate and empower the children and youth in the spirit of Red Cross through constructive trainings and effective leadership, and provide opportunities for directing and harnessing their energy and idealism into worthwhile humanitarian activities.
The link between those who can help and those who need help is what the Red Cross is all about. This humanitarian organization was conceived because there are people in need of help and compassion. Through the generosity and cooperation of people, the Red Cross is able to perform its role in our nation’s development.
The major activities of the RCY are the following:
a. Advocacy and inculcation of moral values and character building;
b. Protection of life and promotion of community health;
c. Service and solidarity, which awaken in them the spirit of compassion to help people in dire need;
d. National and international friendship, understanding and education for peace, and
e. Dissemination of Red Cross Principles and International Humanitarian Law.

A. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
“Better be a tail for the lions than the head of the foxes.” This proverb only tells that being a leader one must be a good follower to his members. Character is the most important ingredient to become an effective leader. It is the determination and virtue of a leader that gives them the respectable character that others look to follow. Other than character one must be competence, compassionate and has courage.
Leadership development should start from an early age. This kind of program in school is very essential to create and build the future leaders of our society. Leadership activities and team building games take a big part to introduce leadership traits in children. These help the children discover their hidden leadership traits.
One of the organizations that offer Leadership Program is the Philippine Red Cross. Through the training request send by the Red Cross Adviser, the office sends volunteers to conduct a Leadership Training in school. The participants are mostly from grades four to six because they are considered as the eldest brothers and sisters to the primary grade pupils.
The trainers gave them different activities such as team building activities that help them know their selves more, revealed their true character, test their competence in tough situations, showed compassion towards their weak team mates and test their courage to go on and finish the tasks given to them.
